The Kuntilanak (bahasa indonesia) - also known as the Pontianak (bahasa melayu) - a vengeful female spirit from South East Asia, sometimes referred to as a vampire, often described as a woman in white like La Llorona.

She is sometimes said to be the ghost of a woman who died birthing a stillborn child. Some accounts say she takes the form of a bird when hunting for blood to suck, others that she uses long-clawed fingers to kill and eviscerate male victims. During the day, she sleeps in a banana tree.

The city of Pontianak in Borneo's province of West Kalimantan gets its name from the high number of ghost women who allegedly haunted the area until Syarif Abdurrahman Al-Qadrie drove them out (and then made the spot the capital of his Sultanate).
